چکیده

This work presents an inertial microfluidic band-pass filter, enabling continuous separation of three sizes of particles or cells with <3μm difference in diameter. The design uses inertial forces to focus particles into two bands along side walls. Two chambers with side outlets are cascaded in series to generate microvortices for continuous band-pass separations. Particles with diameters 23μm, 18.5μm and 15μm were used as cell surrogates to demonstrate separation. Sorting of particle aggregates, doublets, and single particles was also demonstrated. Our results suggest that this simple planar device is applicable for continuous separation of cell aggregates, doublet and single cells.

Fundamentals of inertial focusing in microchannels.

Inertial microfluidics has been attracting considerable interest in recent years due to immensely promising applications in cell biology. Despite the intense attention, the primary focus has been on development of inertial microfluidic devices with less emphasis paid to elucidation of the inertial focusing mechanics. The incomplete understanding, and sometimes confusing experimental results tha...

Real-time Functional Analysis of Inertial Microfluidic Devices via Spectral Domain Optical Coherence Tomography

We report the application of spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) technology that enables real-time functional analysis of sorting microparticles and cells in an inertial microfluidic device. We demonstrated high-speed, high-resolution acquisition of cross-sectional images at a frame rate of 350 Hz, with a lateral resolution of 3 μm and an axial resolution of 1 μm within the mi...

Near-inertial oscillations interacting with mesoscale circulation in the southwestern Japan/East Sea

[1] The near-inertial internal wave energy distribution is investigated in the southwestern Japan/East Sea using vertical round-trip travel time of sound (t) data from 23 pressure-sensor-equipped inverted echo sounders (PIESs) and data from Aanderaa recording current meters (CMs). Currents associated with low-mode near-inertial internal waves are slightly inclined and displace the thermocline v...
